Aerolase Neo Elite: Why We Chose This Laser

    9 min read

When I opened Millennium Skin and Laser, I spent 8 months evaluating lasers before buying one. I looked at IPL devices, alexandrite lasers, diode platforms, and fractional CO2 systems. Every rep said their machine was the best. But every machine had the same problem: they couldn't safely treat the full range of skin tones walking through my door in Clifton, NJ.

Passaic County is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the country. My patients are Indian, Dominican, Filipino, Colombian, Korean, Haitian, Egyptian, Italian. Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, every day. I needed a laser that wouldn't burn, blister, or hyperpigment darker skin. That's why I chose the Aerolase Neo Elite.

What Makes the Aerolase Neo Elite Different

The Neo Elite is a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser with a 650-microsecond pulse duration. That number, 650 microseconds, is the key to everything this laser does differently.

Most Nd:YAG lasers pulse in the millisecond range (1,000+ microseconds). IPL devices are even longer. The longer a laser pulse lasts, the more heat spreads into surrounding tissue. That spreading heat is what causes pain, burns, and pigmentation problems, especially in melanin-rich skin.

At 650 microseconds, the Neo Elite's pulse is short enough to heat the target (blood vessel, hair follicle, pigment cluster) while the surrounding tissue barely registers it. In physics, this concept is called selective photothermolysis: matching the pulse duration to the thermal relaxation time of the target so energy stays where you want it.

The practical result? Patients feel a gentle warming sensation. No numbing cream needed. No ice packs. No gritting your teeth. And for darker skin types, dramatically lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or burns.

    The Physics, Briefly

The 1064nm wavelength penetrates deeper into skin than shorter wavelengths (like the 755nm alexandrite or 810nm diode). It's also absorbed less by melanin compared to those shorter wavelengths. Less melanin absorption = less collateral damage to surrounding pigmented skin.

Combine the deeper wavelength with the ultra-short 650-microsecond pulse, and you get a laser that:

    1. Reaches targets deep in the dermis (blood vessels, hair follicles, collagen fibers)
    2. Heats those targets fast enough to destroy or remodel them
    3. Stops before heat spreads to melanin-containing cells nearby
    4. Produces minimal inflammation on the skin surface

Aerolase published clinical data showing the Neo Elite achieves clearance rates comparable to longer-pulsed devices while producing significantly less pain and fewer adverse events. A study by Goldberg and Metzler in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2020) found the 650-microsecond Nd:YAG effective for vascular and pigmented lesions across Fitzpatrick types I-VI with a favorable safety profile.

    Everything the Neo Elite Treats

This is where the Neo Elite stands apart from single-purpose devices. Because the 1064nm wavelength targets multiple chromophores (hemoglobin, melanin, water), it can treat a wide range of conditions:

    Acne (Active and Scarring)

The laser targets the blood supply feeding overactive sebaceous glands, reducing oil production at the source. It also kills Propionibacterium acnes bacteria and reduces the inflammation driving breakouts. For acne scars, it stimulates collagen remodeling in the dermis.

We've seen patients reduce active acne by 60-80% in 4-6 sessions. Read more in our laser acne treatment guide.

    Melasma

Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat. Most lasers make it worse by triggering a rebound flare. The Neo Elite's short pulse and deep wavelength allow us to target melanin deposits gradually, without the aggressive heat that provokes melanocyte hyperactivity.

Dr. Patel uses a low-fluence toning protocol: 3-5 sessions, 2 weeks apart, with strict sun protection between treatments. It doesn't erase melasma overnight, but it reduces it without the rollercoaster of worsening and improving that other lasers cause. Full details in our laser melasma treatment post.

    Rosacea and Facial Redness

The 1064nm wavelength is absorbed by hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels. The Neo Elite collapses those vessels without damaging the skin surface. For rosacea patients, this means reduced background redness, fewer visible capillaries, and less flushing.

We typically see meaningful improvement in 3-4 sessions. Our rosacea treatment guide covers the full protocol.

    Spider Veins and Vascular Lesions

Small facial and leg veins respond well to the Neo Elite. The laser heats hemoglobin inside the vessel, causing it to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. Most spider veins need 1-3 treatments.

    Hair Removal

This is where the dark-skin safety advantage matters most. Traditional hair removal lasers (alexandrite at 755nm, diode at 810nm) can burn darker skin because they can't distinguish between melanin in the hair follicle and melanin in the surrounding skin.

The Neo Elite's 1064nm wavelength and 650-microsecond pulse minimize this risk. We safely remove unwanted hair on skin types I through VI. For our complete guide to laser hair removal, including what to expect and how many sessions you'll need, see our laser hair removal guide.

For patients with dark skin specifically, our laser treatments for dark skin page goes deeper into why wavelength and pulse duration matter.

    Skin Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging

The Neo Elite stimulates collagen and elastin production through controlled dermal heating. Over a series of treatments, patients see improved skin texture, reduced pore size, and tighter skin. It won't replace a facelift, but for patients who want gradual, natural-looking improvement with zero downtime, it delivers.

    Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis)

The laser penetrates the nail plate and heats the fungal organisms underneath. Most patients need 3-4 sessions. It's not covered by insurance and isn't a guaranteed cure, but it avoids the liver toxicity risk of oral antifungal medications.

    Psoriasis and Inflammatory Conditions

The anti-inflammatory effect of the 650-microsecond pulse can calm psoriasis plaques and other inflammatory skin conditions. This is a less common use, but one we've had success with for patients who haven't responded well to topicals.

How the Neo Elite Compares to Other Lasers

I get asked all the time how the Aerolase stacks up against other lasers. Here's an honest comparison:

    vs. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL isn't actually a laser. It's a broad-spectrum light source that hits the skin with multiple wavelengths at once. IPL works well for fair-skinned patients with sun damage and redness. But it's unpredictable on darker skin because those scattered wavelengths get absorbed by melanin.

Aerolase advantage: Single wavelength (1064nm), less melanin interaction, safer for skin types IV-VI. More precise targeting.

IPL advantage: Sometimes faster for large-area sun damage treatment on very fair skin. Often cheaper per session at chain clinics.

    vs. Alexandrite Laser (755nm)

The alexandrite is popular for hair removal on fair skin. It's fast and effective for skin types I-III. But at 755nm, it's strongly absorbed by melanin, making it risky for darker skin types.

Aerolase advantage: Safe across all skin types. Works for hair removal plus dozens of other conditions. Less painful.

Alexandrite advantage: Slightly faster clearance for hair removal on very fair skin with dark hair.

    vs. Diode Laser (810nm)

The diode sits between the alexandrite and Nd:YAG in wavelength. It can treat slightly darker skin types (up to Fitzpatrick IV in some cases) but still carries pigmentation risk for types V-VI.

Aerolase advantage: Safer for the darkest skin types. Treats more conditions beyond hair removal. Shorter pulse = less pain.

Diode advantage: Faster repetition rate for body hair removal on medium skin tones.

    vs. CO2 Fractional Laser

CO2 lasers are ablative. They vaporize skin tissue for dramatic resurfacing results. Great for deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, and scarring. But they require 1-2 weeks of downtime, carry infection risk, and are not safe for darker skin.

Aerolase advantage: Zero downtime. Safe for all skin types. No wound care. You can go back to work the same day.

CO2 advantage: More dramatic single-session results for severe skin damage on light skin.

What a Treatment Session Looks Like

Here's what happens when you come in for an Aerolase treatment at our Clifton office:

    1. Skin assessment (first visit): Dr. Patel examines your concern, assesses your Fitzpatrick skin type, and discusses realistic expectations. We take baseline photos.

    2. Cleansing: The treatment area is cleaned. No numbing cream is applied because you won't need it.

    3. Eye protection: You'll wear laser safety goggles.

    4. Treatment (10-30 minutes): Dr. Patel passes the handpiece over the treatment area. You'll feel warmth, like a hot stone placed briefly on the skin. The handpiece doesn't touch the skin; it hovers a few millimeters above it. Most patients describe it as comfortable.

    5. Aftercare: We apply a soothing product and sunscreen. Your skin may be slightly pink for an hour or two. No peeling, no scabbing, no wound care.

    6. Return to your day: There's no recovery period. Patients regularly come in during their lunch break.

Treatment frequency depends on the condition. Acne and rosacea typically need sessions every 2 weeks. Hair removal every 4-6 weeks. Skin rejuvenation every 3-4 weeks.

Pricing at Millennium Skin and Laser

Aerolase treatments start at $400/session. The exact price depends on the treatment area and condition being addressed:

    • Small area (spot treatment, small facial zone): $400
    • Full face: $400-600
    • Face and neck: $500-700
    • Body areas (hair removal, spider veins): varies by size

We offer package pricing for treatment series, and we're typically 30% below what you'd pay at comparable practices in Bergen or Essex County. All pricing is discussed upfront during your consultation so there are no surprises.

    Who Shouldn't Get Aerolase Treatment

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients (precautionary; no studies confirm harm, but we err on the side of caution)
    • Active skin infections in the treatment area
    • Recent use of isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6 months
    • Photosensitizing medications (we'll review your medication list)
    • Unrealistic expectations (this is a gradual treatment, not a single-session miracle)

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Does it really not hurt?

Most patients rate it 2-3 out of 10 on a pain scale. Compare that to IPL (5-7 out of 10) or alexandrite hair removal (6-8 out of 10). Some patients have fallen asleep during treatment. We're not exaggerating.

How many sessions will I need?

    It depends on the condition:

    • Acne: 4-6 sessions
    • Rosacea: 3-5 sessions
    • Melasma: 3-6 sessions
    • Hair removal: 6-8 sessions
    • Skin rejuvenation: 4-6 sessions
    • Spider veins: 1-3 sessions

Can I get Aerolase if I have a tan?

We ask patients to avoid tanning for 2-4 weeks before treatment. A natural tan increases melanin in the epidermis, which can affect treatment safety even with the Neo Elite. We'd rather wait a few weeks than risk a suboptimal result.

    Will my insurance cover it?

Most cosmetic laser treatments aren't covered by insurance. Some medical conditions (like fungal nails or certain vascular lesions) may have coverage options. We can discuss this during consultation.

How is this different from the laser treatments at chain spas?

Chain spas typically use IPL (not true laser) or diode devices operated by aestheticians with minimal training. At Millennium Skin and Laser, Dr. Patel personally performs every laser treatment with over 25 years of clinical experience. The device matters, but the person operating it matters more.
